DR. S.

Dr.S was born in Philadelphia, PA.  After spending a year abroad at the Ludwig Maximilians Universität in München, Germany, he obtained his B.S. degree in Chemistry and B.A. degree in German from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, PA.  Following graduate studies at Yale University in the lab of John L. Wood and an NIH postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard in the group of Professor E. J. Corey, he took a position at the California Institute of Technology. His research interests lie in the development of new methods for general applications in synthetic chemistry and biologically active small molecules. Among his many distinctions, he has been the recipient of the Arthur C. Cope Scholar and the E. J. Corey Awards from the American Chemical Society, the Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering (PECASE) from the White House, the 2009 Raymond and Beverly Sackler Prize in the Physical Sciences for Chemistry, and was the 2015 recipient of the Mukaiyama Award by the Society of Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Japan.  He was named the recipient of the 2018 American Chemical Society Award for Creative Work in Synthetic Organic Chemistry and in 2019 became a Fellow of the American Chemical Society. He has trained more than 200 students and postdocs, who have gone on to successful independent careers in industry and academia.  In 2017, he was awarded the Richard P. Feynman Prize for Excellence in Teaching at Caltech, the highest honor for teaching at the institute.

DR. S.

Dr. S is a licensed professional engineer and a physician. The goal of her work is to improve human health through the application of engineering analysis. Her background spans industry and academia, and her experience includes medical device and biotechnology product development, preclinical trials, clinical trials and intellectual property. Currently, she is focused on training of the next generation of biomedical innovators.

She engages students in product design for medicine, as well as clinical immersion experiences, so that students can apply their skills in entrepreneurship, business, science, engineering, and public policy to identify unmet clinical needs; predict human disease patterns; and prevent, treat and cure illness. In turn, she uses examples from clinical medicine, drug delivery and biomaterials in her teaching to illustrate concepts of thermodynamics, kinetics and transport phenomena. She believes that physicians and engineers must be motivated by societal benefit and therefore she is motivated by stopping the world’s leading killers.

Over the course of her career, she has taught students and worked with colleagues from diverse fields, including philosophy, history, linguistics, international development, political science, entrepreneurship, finance, art, science and engineering. She is committed to the idea that individuals from all backgrounds can contribute to medicine and she encourages prospective students from all academic backgrounds to contact her to discuss educational opportunities and research projects.
